Do you glue all the way around the edge or just in a few spots?

The darker wood is Jatoba. Sort of an African Mahagony. The lighter wood is Birds eye maple and the underside of the lid is Red Mable Burl.

Thanks everyone. The hinges are cut in. Whew!!! Those are always tough when you don't have a straight side reference line. Sloping sides top to bottom and left to right make it very difficult to cut....

Here are a few update photos of the project. Sorry for the quality. It's really hard to tell in the photos but the box is shaped curving top to bottom and side to side.

Hey Jim,

I would make a box that would hold 50 pens. Two drawers, 25 pens each side by side.

The box would have a lid predominatly glass to see through to the first drawer folding 25 pens....

Here's a box I'm working on for the State fair in Feb 08. It's morstly Bird's eye maple, but will have additional woods inlaid. I added a few sketch's to help visualize how it will look in the end....

Probably the best way to cut the lid from a small box is the band saw. Second to that is the tablesaw which I use for almost all my boxes. Set the fence square, cut through on two opposing sides,...

Just to throw this in. I recently started using the Festool Domino. It's a great method to edge join boards or assembling legs etc. But the Domino's do need to kept sealed.

Use an ebony or wenge' or some other very dark wood.

Inlay an oval right in the middle at the seam from the box bottom and top. Make it pretty thick in depth. ...

Just a note...if your putting any precious jewelry or the like on the suede, then use a high quality synthetic sueded as the real stuff wil tarnish jewelry.

Your going to struggle with stress on this particular box as you've already sanded the sides. If you still have some left to cut, I'd say tape around them with masking...
