Mineral oil is Paraffin Oil also called Liquid Paraffin.

You could also make the gaps an even figure and take up the space with a couple of wider stiles...

I use it also and "scrub" it in with a kitchen scourer then polish off with a soft cloth. A small amount goes a long way and it will not affect any finish that is to be used later
