Found this on my nature strip this afternoon. Some sort of bench seat I guess. Thick and heavy.

I would think that you'd want something with a gloss finish to make it easier for the wood to slide over.
I don't think it needs to be oil varnish, but not sure what is compatible with the oil. -

Easier to see with an analogue meter but you should see a brief flick of the needle or low resistance as it charges up.
But leaking or bulging is bad regardless of correct measurement. -
