I would think that you'd want something with a gloss finish to make it easier for the wood to slide over.
I don't think it needs to be oil varnish, but not sure what is compatible with the oil.

If you need shorter lengths for parts of your box, you may be able to cut sections that are short enough that the twist in each is manageable.

No idea if soaking and weighting would help. ...

So, what lumber is turned into veneer to make lvl? Presumably a rotary veneer.

Easier to see with an analogue meter but you should see a brief flick of the needle or low resistance as it charges up.
But leaking or bulging is bad regardless of correct measurement.
