Second Segmented Turning
Thought I would share my second segemented turning. It's not perfect but what project in woodworking is...
This piece has 281 pieces and took me about 20 hours to complete. It's about 10" wide at the feature ring.
Instead of using a solid piece for the bottom, I made a segmented ring and plugged it with a piece of cherry. The theory is that this will prevent splitting when the wood moves. It also adds a little bit more interest to the piece.

Very nice work Michael. Another feature you might want to try is a "floating bottom", as very wide (in the radial direction) segments in the bottom ring may still have a tendency to open at one of the joints. The floating bottom (which is not glued in place) can be whatever size you need so that the bottom ring segments can be much narrower.

Excellent, and "perfect enough."

Nice job Mick
Howdy folks,
Mick has shown us his piece of work and no doubt he is proud of it otherwise he would not have signed it hey! As we all know nature is our master and only time will tell whether Mick's bits will hold together! But never fear, we saw it when it was new and we respect nature for what it wants to do and that is why we are happy to play in wood! Nice job Mick!

That is a very nice piece. Don't worry about the bottom, what you have done will last forever. I have used a solid piece on he bottom of many similar pieces with out any problems.
