    Default longworth chuck mods

Having made a Longworth chuck and enjoyed the ease of use that they allow,I have made a couple of `improvements`to suit myself.Maybe someone else may find them useful.

Firstly I drilled holes in the outer edge of the front disk to allow a screwdriver to be inserted to give increased leverage when clamping .

Secondly I inserted T nuts on the rear of the front disk to allow the longworth chuck to be used as a donut chuck at the same time.Place the item to be reverse chucked onto the longworth, tighten, then add the donut -nice and secure .

    Well done.

If your lathe doesn't have a spindle lock, or even if it does, several holes in the rims of both disks could enable use of two screwdrivers to function like Tommy bars in a scroll chuck, which ultimately is what a Longworth chuck is of course.

The front disks of my Longworths are too thin for this, but maybe for the next ones.

For shapes that can't exploit use of a donut chuck, filament tape wrapped across the body to the back of the back disk works pretty well. I use four strips of tape, and fold a short flap at each end to facilitate removal.

    Cheers,
    Joe

    Nice idea

Read somewhere recently, (probably an old More Woodturning mag) that a chap in the US had made his own version of the Longworth chuck and was using the tommy bar idea. Made out of machined metal. I believe he was offering it for sale. He said he hadn't been aware of the longworth.

    That looks very handy.

I've never got around to making a longworth chuck, can it be made with a simple recess to go on my scroll chuck? I reckon that would save me heaps of time in finishing bowl bottoms.

Can anyone provide a link to a good set of plans for the longworth?

    Thanks

    Steve

I don't remember its use of Tommy bars, but the alternate sold by a chap in Oregon (I think) had a slightly different geometry of the slots, and didn't seem to function as well. IIRC, he's died and his sons weren't interested in continuing the venture. They called it a "Rim Chuck," and here's some discussion (via Google [chick duck longworth] - first 4 hits): Experience with the Rim Chuck - AAW Forums

As promised here are the instructions I got from Old Pete. There aren't any pictures which make it a bit hard to visualize some of it.

Thanks WH and Joe for that info.

I've always been put off by the prospect of accurately marking and cutting the slots. I'll give it a go and let you know how it works out.

Oh, and thanks for not flaming me for hijacking the thread and not using search!

This is what I had in mind to use the donut chuck for.
