More wet weather handles
Must be the weather, I've had a set of nice old Marples and a few Bergs hanging around, waiting for handles. So last week I did these, still a few Bergs to go......
Forest Oak, which my friend Google tells me has been introduced to Victoria
and is now a weed ! So get your saws out and save the enviroment

Nice job Phil. Wish there were some of those weeds around here. Forest Oak and Bull Oak - beautiful.

Nice work Phil; lovely figure in the handles.
Picko, is Bull Oak the same as Bulloke? Bought some at the Horsham Ewe-turn last year. Thought it was local but this site has it as WA.Cheers, Ern

Yes Ern, according to "Native Trees and Shrubs of South-Eastern Australia" by Leon Costermans.
I have always known it as the two word spelling and didn't know of the other spelling. It grows around here, usually with Cypress Pine. It's great stuff if you can find a big enough piece without cracks.

Thanks Picko.
Whereabouts are you in NSW if you don't mind me asking?
The lump I got was a medium bowl blank, sound, with fantastic rays.Cheers, Ern

Hello Phil,
those handles look superb.
If I was going to design a handle for a paring chisel, I think I would steal your pattern.
I particularly like the wide round end for fitting the palm, as well as the extra length.
Well done.
SG.... some old things are lovely

So what kind of shape would you use for 'thumpers'?
About the same but perhaps a lip near the metal like Titans?Cheers, Ern

Very nigh swerk there Phil!!
The Casuarinas and Allocasuarinas generally have pretty grain, with some have really outstanding rays.

That's fine piece of turning.

A local common name around here was Bakers Oak. I've talked to an old cutter who
supplied Buladelah bakery with 4 logs a day, year in year out. Burns hot and
clean fresh from the bush.
