Identifying Australian wood.
G'day all,
Some of you will shake your head at this, but if its wood, I have a crack at turning it. I don't necessarily know what type it is, mostly because I rescue stumps, off cuts, etc....which have long since departed from its easier to identify tree stage.
ie, today, went for a drive to two spots. one was where an old house is being renovated and got some great hardwood, the second spot was to an 100yo Queenslander that had recently needed re-stumping, so got some very nice heavy, very dry, ready to turn blocks.
Has anyone come across a picture gallery or something that helps identify timbers by their grain, colour, characteristics, maybe weight? Preferably from around QLD, but Australia in general.
OR, should we maybe have a crack of creating it in these forums, for everyone else that might come after scratching their noggin as to what wood they have ;-)
Thanks in advance!
Daniel.

I'm not from Auz but from reading I can point you at one of the forum members TTiT he has a great site for the trees of his district.
I'm sure more local members will direct you to more complete sites of Aus Trees (and I'll be interested to see them as well.)Dragonfly
No-one suspects the dragonfly!

The Wood.
Hi Daniel,
Go to TTIT 's web page & have a look at all his Wooden Eggs with Photos & Names.
That may help a little, as he is in FNQ.Regards,

There have been two great data bases started and gone to some depths I just went through my bookmarks recently and found these sites now defunct/gone/lost.
Here's one which has many listed HobbitHouse Wood ID site click on the pick and it opens a new window with details etc.
This site is an Australian based one has so much info www.timber.net.au - The Australian Database of Timber - Home

Vern has a great collection of eggs & CQ tree info. Fantastic resource, but he is several hundred clicks short of FNQ.
Be careful if the timber blocks were house stumps. Some were treated with all sorts of concoctions, creosote, deildrin, DDT, sump oil & you name it. If it could possibly stop white ants it was tried!
