    Default York Gum Burl

Finally turned this burl, thanks to Willie.2012-12-19 12.08.29.jpg
Bought at Perth Wood Show last year, was a tad apprehensive about starting it.
    I was looking for that "overflowing" effect.2013-11-28 09.36.41a.jpg2013-11-28 09.37.22a.jpg2013-11-28 09.37.44a.jpg2013-11-28 09.37.56a.jpg
I got some good comments from our clubs critique. Home

Let's hear what you guys think of it.

    Thumbs up

Beatiful work and a super finish!!!

I think york gum burl has to be the most subtly beautiful of the burls!!

There is nothing bad about it. That is one beautiful looking bowl.

You've done a great job on this Col, especially the finish. A lot of people let themselves down by not finishing appropriately. As you've asked for the bad (I'm sorry), the bowl looks a little chunky to me and the shape doesn't quite work. I think that if you're going to have the rim flowing there needs to be a sharp edge between the rim and the bowl itself rather than it being rounded over. Terry Scott from NZ (website) does some terrific work with Australian burls and his bowls (IMHO) are beautiful in shape and form.

I hope this comment doesn't put you off as I've learn't by honest critiques.

    Cheers,
    Scott.

I agree with Scott. Full marks for the finish, but I would have liked to see a clearer dliniation between the overflow rim and the bowl. Having said that, I appreciate the difficulties in turning burls: I just had a 95% finished Mallee burl slpit into 3 when a crck unexpectly opened. My sister-in-law gets some more beatifully turned firewood.

No, I don't mind constructive criticism at all. That's how we learn.
In my defence, I didn't want a defined line in the rim as IMO it would not go with the "overflowing" effect.
I sanded the bottom of the rim because a chunk fell off & left a ragged rim.
This was the first shaped burl I have turned & wanted something different.
I love the York Gum Burls & was very pleased with the outcome.
Thanks for all the comments....even the "bad" ones.
    Regards
    Col......forever learning.

Very nice looking burl and finish.
Burls can be a little intimidating for sure. For what they cost you don't want to mess one up.
    Good job

wow I like it! turning that shape is very effective with the grain! I was given what looked like a burl but was hiding a dead branch inside! fastest I've hollowed a bowl ever!
