Lace Bobbins
Lace bobbins come in all shapes and sizes depending on the type of lace being made and also the country .The most common in Australia is the Midland bobbin this is the bobbin that has spangle attached to the base to stop the rolling . Of all of the woodturner in Australia 98% do not know what a lace bobbin is mainly because there is very little written about them but also unless they know of a lace maker either in the family or friend there is no way they can get the correct measurements but that is not to say they could not make a beautifull bobbin if they had the inclination .The other 1 .1/2 % have made them but given up for any number of reasons .The other 1/2% make them mainly for their wives and groups their wives belong to. Now before you load your shotguns to shoot me down in flames check with the Australian lace Guild or ther affiliates in each state .You will find that there are 3 of us in W.A now 4 with Jenny and 2 ladies that paint them .There were 3 in SA ,3 in Victoria, 2 in Tasmania there was one in NSW but I think he has given it away and one in Queensland and ACT .Jenny needs all of the encouragement and constructive critiscm she can get as we all all getting close to our use by date.
Happy wood turning,
Ron
