    Question Importing Exotic Turning Blanks

I would like to hear of anyones experience in importing small quantities of turning blanks from overseas, particularly in regards to Australian Quarantine and Customs.
    Thanks

I'd be interested too, there's some nice stuff available in the states and other places. freight could be a killer.

perhaps we should post this in the Timber forum ?

    Cheers

I would suggest you contact both Customs and Quarantine. I did this recently before importing some pen blanks and had no problems once I had discussed the issue with them.

I took a few blanks from Aus to NZ over Easter. I checked with customs re what was allowed. Apparently as long as there are no active borers/bugs it's ok. The customs guy in NZ (Wellington) was great, no problems. I also brought back a few blanks from NZ - no problems there also. I made a point of declaring it both in New Zealand and with our customs people over here.

    thanks for the info guys

i phoned quarantine and they didn't seem to have a problem (that was until I mentioned olive from jerusalem - they need to make sure the stuff doesn't sprout and grow or something like that, so I think I'll forget the olive).

Other stuff with no bark, borers or dirt from US is OK.
They need the full latin/species name of the wood being imported.

He suggested I let the quarantine guys at the post office know whats coming in so they can look out for it.

Talk to the quaratine guys before you part with your money.
    They seem helpful.

    cheers

Do the Quarantine blokes have specialist botanists available to make sure the wood you have is the wood you told them it was?
