    Default Special Bowl

    Hi All
Even though I have retired my Grand daughter requested a large fruit bowl as her engagement present and it was to hard to say no
I had a couple of boards of European Horn Beam that were about 180 x 50 x 800 so the only option was to turn to the dark side and segment the bowl
the finished bowl is 400 in dia. and stands 155 high (should hold a few bananas ) the base is Merabu and the inserts are Blue Gum the rest is Hornbeam
all rings were done as 12 segments with the third ring having the segment half hornbeam and half blue gum joined at 90 in the center of the segmen
the photos show the first layout and progressive glue up At the time the photos were taken the bowl has 5 coats of Danish oil I will probably give it 2 or 3 more then a light cut with 0000 steel wool and soft wax
I hope she is happy with it I know I am
    Look forward to your comments
    Regards Bowl-Basher

    Nicely done
Perhaps I should get into segmented as finding a good blank for large bowls can be hard. They crack or get mold. If you rough turn green then they can still crack or turn into a canoe as they dry. I've had a few end up quite a bit smaller than the plan.
    Regards

I like the bowl. The square buttons on the bowl give it a uniqueness.
