I thoroughly agree with the above pundits.
Your local library may also have a copy of "Turning Wood" by Richard Raffan , which also has a video that accompanies the book.

I'd also recommend "Woodturning - A Manual of Techniques" by Hugh O'Neill published by Crowood Press if you can still get hold of it - It's rather an old publication - but then, I'm an old turner.

When I first started turning I was tought all about keeping the bevel rubbing and cutting towards supported timber but nothing brought it home as well as O'Neill's first chapter which has you experimenting with planes, hammers and chisels on flat surfaces where you can see things happening in slow motion. This really gives practical instruction and, more importantly, the reasons behind the basics of turning.
