oval turning
Run into this on my wanderings. I saw one at the Sydney wood show but did not stay long enough to get a good look at it. Richard Raffan was gving a demo at the same time....shoulda paid more attention.
This one is a bit of a how to build, Hey Skew another project....

Just turn them nice and green and let them warp.

I saw a fantastic closed form a few years ago at either the Vic Woodturning comp (Nunawading)... or maybe 'twas at the Peninsular WT Club show? I forget, exactly. Anywho, 'twas similar to Gil's closed forms with an ebonised rim, except 'twas waaaay ovalled.
If I hadn't seen it with my own eyes I'd have sworn 'twas photoshop'd.
Don't laugh, but... yeah... that's been on my project list ever since then.

hughie there was a bloke in Charters Towers that used to go to the Townsville Turners meetings about 10 years ago who had an oval turning chuck.
He used to spend more time making metal jigs for woodturning than he ever did wood turning but geeze some of them were interesting.Cliff.
If you find a post of mine that is missing a pic that you'd like to see, let me know & I'll see if I can find a copy.

Interesting post, Hughie. Don't have the brains for that, tho'. I do same as Terry. But .... after checking out the "more info.html" site... it's worth a try!! Can't stop turning for that long a time, though. It'd take me forever, and I don't have that much time left.
