Gooday all.

Had an interesting job to do over the last few days.

We had to make some "inside out" standard and table lamps for an interior decorator.

They were made from American Cherry and didn't look half bad when finished. The standard lamp was 1.5m high and the matching table lamps 450mm.

I must admit that turning 4 quarters at 45mm square 1.5m long was scarier than turning the big posts.

Great fun. Used to make them years ago and have the insides painted black. Pretty different stuff, but to make it work really well you have to have very acurate saw cuts and reasonably good planing skills or paint the outside as well as the inside to cover the bodgie joints and slightly miss matched grain.

I used to make them by cutting a 4x4 pine lengthwise down the centre twice to get 4 2x2's (approx) then rotate the 4 outside edges into the centre and re-glue them with a paper joint. Put the whole lot between centres and turn the required shape leaving the ends square. Paint the turned sections black then split the paper joint and reglue the 4 pieces back to where they came from.

Hey presto inside out turning. They made great table lamps, candle holders, etc. and if you were game enough (stupid enough) you could also turn part of the outside sections to mirror some of the inside ones.

Brings back memories of cold winter days at the Sunday craft market in the early 70's. Brrrrhh....

Thank God I no longer have do that for a living.

Only diff is that we used cherry instead of pine and probably charged more
