Default First stab at burl and other stuff

    Hi All,
I got a bit of burl from the lumber bunker just to give it a try. I have to say it was easier than I had expected. I had to use the CA glue on a few spots and I was not game to go thin on the sides but it was an interesting trial. I am not sure what timber it is but it came from Tassie. The others are some of my recent stuff. A camphor bowl, huon pine vase and a blackwood box.

    Regards
    John

    Wayne,
The burl is 2 coats of danish oil. I did not use wax on it as it has all the small holes in it.
The camphor bowl is organoil as it is food safe.
The box and vase are hut wax.

    Regards
    John

    John,

Nice job, well done. The first bowl looks like resinous eucalyptus burl

    Thanks everyone for the response.
This was a new experience for me in turning and as I sanded it a prayer was said to the turner in the sky. It is a eucalypt of some kind from Tasmania and very granular with hard resin and other gunk. I first planed on a dish shape but I was afraid the rim would break off so I kept it simple. I do like the look of it and feel the effort was worth it. While I am on the subject is there a product other than superglue that can be used to harden up problem lumps of wood.

If you have a section of soft grain John you can try cellulose sanding sealer or shellac, couple of coats (though they will determine something of how you then finish). Or epoxy for serious filling of cracks etc.

I've found euc. burl with lots of voids remarkably strong btw. You can get a bit of insurance though when hollowing by running some straps of duct tape around the outside.
    Cheers, Ern

    Resser,
Thanks for the tips. I intend looking for more burl in the near future.

    Regards
    John
