    Raise the pillow blocks a couple of inches and you could wrap sandpaper around the shaft to make it into a drum sander...

    Very nice, but the weak point is the 1 1/4 X 8 thread. I would be concerned about hanging a 1 meter X 1 meter hunk of timber on that.

    A 2 1/4 X 8 thread is common to South Bend Heavy 10L and 13 inch metal lathes, and face plates are available for around $50 used to $110 new from the bay.

    I just bought a used 8 1/2 inch, 2 1/4 X 8 faceplate for under $47 delivered to my door. $11.00 shipping.
