A little bit of progress today. My supplier has been chasing up a long list of Bahco files for me together with pricing. So far it looks very good. We are just checking availability. Should know that tomorrow. But that's looking good so far too. I would like to have all the facts together before I order.
I have another couple of sources for different brands of files in case there are any availability issues. Obviously, some files are better than others and I've been talking with Fence Furniture to help me sort the rat from the cat. Later today, I will post a list of saw toothing with the corresponding file sizes. As I mentioned earlier, please help me edit it if it needs it. I'm no expert.
Best regards
Pete

Now, whilst we are awaiting file info, let's see some of what I'll be bringing to Ballarat.
First a few saws picked up at the recent TTTG sale in Lindfeild, Sydney.
The retoothed Spear & Jackson ready for sharpening.
Henry Boker
A Spear & Jackson with thumb hole.
And an old Richard Ibbotson. I probably won't touch this one. It's a very thick blade and is old enough to be put out to pasture. On show in the workshop as a talking point.
A couple of saw sets. Eclipse 77 and a German one.
A brand new Bahco jointing file.
And a shot of the proposed saw vice in pieces.
Have fun.
Pete.

Great idea but I don't want you to invoice our swags as we have already paid for them once. I guess there's no such thing as a free ride.

I pick him up at the train station then
Well at least he won't have to clean my shed when he arrives

Whoops. It's been suggested should read my posts before i submit. Where wiuld the fun be in that. People would suddenly know what I'm talking about and could stop guessing. Ok maybe they woukd not know but at least they t would be able to read it.
I think i meant to say i could 'even' bring your swags for you

Pete
That is an exceptional group of saws you picked up.
Just a comment on the vice of which I have a similar device: I thought it would be excellent for shorter saws such as back saws, but when I tried it I found that there was too much leverage possible. In practice it would vibrate as I was filing which results in chatter (not to yourself ). This made it quite difficult to file smoothly, particularly if shaping was involved, which is often par for the course on an old saw plate.
I would give it a quick try to see if your vice does the same as mine before relying too heavily on it. It was a pity because with the ability to angle the vice back I thought it would be perfect for sloped gullets. My vice is probably adequate for lightly retouching a saw that has only just lost it's edge.
Sorry if I am sounding a little negative, but saw filing is not helped by a vice that won't keep still!
Btw, it occurs to me that you are amassing quite a tidy S & J collection and I know we have seen some of them. I wondered if you might like to put up a thread on them at some time.
