I have sent the following email with cad files for the chisels, plane blades, cap irons to virtually every company in Victoria that does milling and grinding work. I want to see if we can get a better price for the milling and grinding work quoted for us from Rippon. As this is were our cost's are the highest at this time.
I am contacting you on behalf of a woodworking club whose members are seeking to get a range of woodworking chisels, plane blades for standard metal Stanley hand planes, and cap irons milled, ground, and tapped. This project has been agreed upon by the members of the woodworking club and we are currently tendering this job to a large range of milling and grinding companies in Victoria.
We will supply the plane blades, lever caps and chisels precut by the laser and water jet companies. We have made arrangements for the chisels to be water jet cut and the plane blades and cap irons to be laser cut from M2 HSS sheet. The M2 HSS will be supplied by Bohler-Uddeholm Australia . The heat treatment will be done by Sutton's using their salt bath furnace, to reduce warping and de-carbonization of the steel during heat treatment.
We are getting a total of 250 Stanley plane blades laser cut from 2.5 mm thick M2 HSS sheet in the following sizes and quantities:
- 1 3/4" Stanley Plane Blades - (Quantity - 21)
- 2" Stanley Plane Blades (Quantity - 101)
- 2 1/4" Stanley Plane Blades (Quantity - 6)
- 2 3/8" Stanley Plane Blades (Quantity - 102)
- 2 5/8" Stanley Plane Blades (Quantity - 20)
We are also getting 250 caps irons otherwise known as chip breakers laser cut from 3 mm thick mild steel again to go with our Stanley Replacement plane blades.
Both the Stanley replacement plane blades and cap irons, are all the same length and thickness with the width being the only variant.
Lastly we are getting our chisels water jet cut from 4 mm thick M2 HSS sheet totaling 451 individual chisels in a range of 11 widths. The chisel widths are 3 mm, 4.5 mm, 6 mm, 9 mm, 12 mm, 15 mm, 20 mm, 25 mm, 30 mm, 35 mm and 40 mm. Again all the chisels, are the same length and thickness with the width being the only variant.
For the Plane Blades and Lever Caps, we need the following work done:
- Milling 25º Bevel unto the M2 Stanley plane Blades in their annealed state (The bevel need not be comply milled away just the bulk as we will hollow grind the blades ourself at the very end)
- Milling 30º Bevel in the mild steel lever caps
- Tapping a 1/4 hole with a 28 TPI UNF thread in the mild steel cap iron.
- Grinding top & bottom faces of Stanley blades flat after heat treatment (No need to flatten the lever caps, just the tapping)
- For the Chisels, we need the following work done:
- After heat treatment, grinding of three bevels for the chisels, on the front and two side faces (See this linked photo for example)
- Grinding top & bottom faces of chisels flat
We are able to deliver everything to you around the middle of January 2008 at the latest, being aware of xmas holidays, this may alter slightly depending on ability of 3rd parties to deliver their services.
What I need at this point is a price break down for the following:
- Milling a 25º bevel in the annealed M2 Stanley plane blades
- Milling a 30º bevel in the mild steel cap irons
- Grinding top & bottom faces of stanley blades flat
- Tapping a 1/4 hole with a 28 TPI UNF thread in the mild steel cap irons
- Milling the bevels for the chisels
- Grinding top & bottom faces of chisels flat
Do not hesitate to call me on xx xxxx xxxx or email me if you have any questions. I will contact you no later then Monday the 8th of December 2008. Attached are dxf and pdf (just incase you cannot open the dxf files) showing the Stanley plane blades, the cap irons and the chisels, as they will come from the laser cutter, to you.
I look forward to hearing from you.
Yours truly

Hi TS,
Please add brass for ferrules to my order.
With regards to the wooden plane blades, if we are splitting this off for later delivery is it possible to maybe get other widths?
Regards
Brendan

TS,
Please add brass ferrules to my chisel order too please,
Going back a few posts, I'd like to comment that in my view its not so important what type of screw the cap irons come with. Hex, slot etc I don't think it would matter seeing as that screw is invisible for most of the time?
Just my 2c.
Incidently, is anyone who I could pay to turn some chisel handles? I think someone did volunteer but this thread is now so long I doubt I could find the post.
can I also just say tremendous effort, and thanks for all your hard work.

dynoforce and Harry R, please read my previous post carefully. You will get two pieces of brass tubing each tube being 150 mm long, each tube will suit either the smaller or large size chisels, per details found in my CAD drawings of the chisels. You will NOT get individual ferrules you will need to cut up your tube length as you see fit.
The ferrules were in my CAD drawing from the start, it would be rather pointless if you had chisels but no ferrules to make your handles with and then had to go hunting for them. And then ended up paying much more for the ferrules because you needed a small amount of brass tubing. The aim is to give everyone a complete chisel kit, were the only thing needed to finish the chisels is wooden handles and a little bit of time to assemble each of the chisels.
I have added everyone who has asked for ferrules to my spreadsheet.
As usual it is a question of demand if we can get enough people interested then we can get anything you want? What width at what thickness are you interested in?
On the subject of ferrules. At this point a bolster and brass ferrules is the lowest entry point, and a full proof back up plan. If I can scratch back $5 to $10 of the price, I would like to see if we could maybe get brass ferrules turned for just like the ones used by Blue Spruce, or something like that made by Bobl. It would remove the need for a bolster by combining the bolster with the ferrule, and it looks really nice to boot. I do so love the look of this. Its however a question of price. I am however aware that many of us including me are price sensitive, so reducing costs is kind of my mission at the moment.

There's also Harold and Saxon ferrules

They would cost a fortune in brass alone. Plus they would not suit such fine chisels as ours. Both mechanically and in terms of balance. Fine chisels need a delicate solution. Those sockets would weigh more then the blade and handle combined, disturbing the balance of the tool in hand. These tools must be light and delicate to the touch. If a huge weighty socket got thrown into the mix it would defeat the point of the tool.
I know that Harold and Saxon are more socket then ferrules. They are made by tapping the socket and the tang is threaded, and then screwed together. This kind of setup could never work with our chisels.
Only a much finer solution like those of Blue spruce would work. If you look at the CAD file you have 12 mm width at the widest point of the tang but it will only be 3.5 mm thick. Therefore either a bolster combined with a simple ferrule or a small ferrule style socket are the only way forward.
This is why people have to opt IN to get the simple ferrules and decide on their own not to go down that path if they have the material and machinery they can concoct more elaborate solution just like Bobl has done.

Just had a quick look at their site, nice chisels, I wonder if they would sell them sans handles.
At least, after looking at that pic, I know I need to source some tiger myrtle for my handles."There is no dark side of the moon really. Matter of fact it's all dark."

This is what I had in mind.
*EDIT* I just sent this design to 4 industrial CNC lathe companies to see how much something like this would cost. The companies are Hargo, Aero Spec Engineering, Wiz Laser and Parish Engineering. All have CNC lathes which would easily mass produce these type of ferrules to our specs. It is simple a question of cost.
