Your set of 7 chisels (both files) is actually a set of 8.

The orginal set of 6 was
    "3 mm, 6 mm, 9 mm, 12 mm, 15 mm, 20 mm3 mm, 6 mm, 9 mm, 12 mm, 15 mm, 20 mm" - post #310.

Added to that was an optional 4.5, to make a set of 7.

Your latest files have that plus a 25mm, making a total of 8 chisels.

    • We only get the two edge bevel ground for us and members can grind their own primary cutting bevel.

This will reduce our per chisel and per set costs and make enough space to fit everyone unto a single sheet.

I cannot count its a set of 8, not a set of seven. And no the 9 mm has not been dropped.

I am busy moving house and I am rather distracted at the moment. Next week things will settle down and I will be more here.

I spoke to Dave at Surface Technology aka Sutton's and their salt bath operators are willing and able to heat treat out chisels and plane blades. The going price for a triple temper of M2 to Rc 62 - 64 is $12 a kg.

Because the plane blades and chisels need to be dipped into the salt bath vertically, Surface Technology needs a hole to hang the blade from as it is dipped into the furnace. This is not a problem with the plane blades however the chisel were a challenge. To aid the heat treater I have added a 3 mm loop at the end of the tang with a 3 mm hole from which the chisel will be suspended off using a wire as the chisels are dipped into the furnace.

Heat Treating Cost for Stanley Plane Blades

The 800 mm x 2.5 mm x 1500 mm M2 Sheet weights 24 kg's multiplied by $12 plus GST for the heat treatment comes to $288 plus GST. With an average of 122 plane blades from a single sheet this comes to $2.36 plus GST per plane blade.

This brings the final per Stanley plane blade price to $35.56 inc GST.

Heat Treating Cost per Pairing Chisel

The 800 mm x 4 mm x 1500 mm M2 Sheet weights 39 kg's multiplied by $12 plus GST for the heat treatment comes to $468 plus GST. With an average of 301 chisel sets from a single sheet this comes to $1.55 plus GST per plane blade.

To make the chisels more affordable and to give members a choice in how their chisels are finished

Members will have a choice to which level their chisels are finished to. It is up to you to decide on how much work and time you are willing to do, with the machinery and tools that you have access to. The more work you are able to do yourself the cheaper the chisels will be. The levels consist of four stages as follows:

    • Stage 01 - This is the cheapest option and will involve no milling and grinding, you will get the chisels in there raw heat treated state, i.e. very crude. This option is only suitable for people who have access to a surface grinder or linisher machine. You will need to do all the flattening and bevels yourself. This can be up to 0.4 mm across the whole surface of the chisel, while this does not sound like much we are talking about M2 HSS steel triple tempered to Rc 62 - 64, so we are talking TUFF. This option is not for ill equipped, and is only suitable for those who have access to a machine shop or are experienced metal workers. The cost of a stage 01 chisels will be $15.80 inc GST
    • Stage 02 - After the chisels come back from the heat treaters John at Rippon will give the top and bottom faces a lick so they are flat. These chisels will have no bevels at all and will in essence be firmer style chisels. If you wish to add any bevel you will need to do that yourself. The cost of a stage 02 chisels will be $32.30 inc GST
    • Stage 03 After the chisels come back from the heat treaters John at Rippon will give the top and bottom faces a lick so they are flat. He will then grind on the two edge bevels for you, however you will need to add your own primary cutting bevel yourself. The cost of a stage 03 chisels will be $40.00 inc GST
    • Stage 04 - This is a fully ready to assemble chisel that will be flat top and bottom and the chisel will have both the side bevels and the primary cutting bevel ground for you. All you would need to do is sharpen and attach your handle of choice and your chisel will be ready. However this ease comes at a higher price. The cost of a stage 04 chisels will be $44.30 inc GST

If you are down for some Chisels please post back or PM me with what levers you wish to have you chisels finished to.

    Prototype

The next stage is the making of a prototype set of chisels, plane blades and cap iron. This will assure us that our manufacturing process is in order and we will be able to make any adjustments to our manufacturing process, if needed. I will keep you informed about this as information comes to hand.

The Stanley Replacement Plane Blades and Pairing Chisel Order has become bigger then Ben Hur, and as a result it has taken me almost a full week of running around, making call's and sending emails to keep this order going. I am therefore asking if members would be willing to give a small percentage of the total cost of their individual orders for my time and expense incurred in organizing this order. I am therefore would like to ask for a 2% to 3% donation from members to cover my time and expense.

    Cap Screw

Last week I sent away emails to assorted fasteners companies. Most have replied that they cannot help. But today I got an email from Bolts Galore in Carrum Downs. Tel: (03) 9770 8400 Fax: (03) 9770 8411 [email protected]. Bolts Galore can supply the exact high tensile zinc plate bolt with a 1/4" 28 TPI UNF thread for our cap irons for $4.95 each plus GST as per Woodwould drawings.

    Attachment 90884

This brings the per cap iron cost to $15.35 inc GST.

Quotes from other Milling and Grinding Companies

Last week I sent away emails to assorted Milling and Grinding Companies, my inbox has been flooded with sorry not interested emails. However this morning I got an email from Ivan at Alcol Precision Engineering, who is willing and able but he want more details before quoting. I am doing this to just see how competitive Rippons prices are.

    Fancy Bolsters for Pairing Chisels

I may have some news on that front as one company wants me to call them to talk about it.

Still Taking Order's for Stanley Plane Blades and set of 8 Chisel Sets

I am still taking order for for Stanley Plane Blades and set of 8 Chisel Sets. We still have 35 Stanley Plane Blades up for grabs and 5 sets of Chisels left.

See updated spreadsheet in PDF for further details.

Just a reminder that your set of 7 chisels still shows 8 chisel sizes.

Stage 4 for my set of eight, please!

I'm more than happy to run with a 3% donation to assist with costs, but is that really enough?

    Hi TS,
Re donation I would expect, no insist you build in some margin for all the running around. 3% is minimal.

    TS,

Stage 04 for my chisels thanks.

I'm interested in the fancy ferrules.

Happy with 3%, or more if required, perhaps everyone could put in enough to cover your chisels.

    Cheers, Jack
