Is there any way you can get some assistance as you are obviously snowed under with this assignment? Perhaps there are a few others closde handy who may put their hand up to help reduce the pile for you. Well done so far!

Received blades today ,had to explain to MFWAF what the heavy package was ,was hoping to cut her off at the pass and get to the post office before her .
I got to the post office 20mins after her.
Any way we'll be talking again sometime before Christmas.

I must say these irons are very nice , cant wait to get a bevel on them and fit them up to my planes.

I would like to to thank Thumbsucker and DJ's Timber and all the forumites who participated in this project and made it happen.
I'm very pleased with the outcome.

    Thanks again.

Thumbs up 34 pages of reading bliss

I just wadded through this thread. What an epic. Someone called it bigger than Ben Hur? No ##### Sherlock!

Anyhoo, I only have one question.

    Did TS get his 3%?

I sure hope he did. The man deserves it, that's for sure.

Oh. Just an side observation. Perhaps it's not a good idea to publicly post suppliers quotes until the tender is closed.

    What 3%?

By the time I post, the quotes in the thread, I would have already have gotten all the quotes from all providers.

I think Helmut is being retorical and sarcastic at the same time

I think it likely that the additional dollars went to suppliers in the end, and Helmut had to be content with kudos instead.

    Hi Helmut and DJ,
congratulations on a very successful venture with these blades and cap-irons.
    Many thanks indeed.
Have all orders been mailed yet?
I would be surprised if they were as DJ had so much collating and sharpening to do.
I am looking forward to my small order of one blade and two cap-irons, especially after the rave reviews from other posters.
    Many thanks once again.

    Wow.

I must say that I am extremely disappointed to hear this.

47 people order blades, 18 publicly offered to pay a donation (and I understand that most or all of these did), and in the end you got nothing. 3% = $280. I bet you spent that much on phone calls and petrol alone.

I have no problem with those that placed orders and did not feel compelled to pay a "commission" , or "donation" because it wasn't part of the original deal. Fair enough.

I'm sure some of you will read this and think that all I'm doing is stirring the pot, and since I wasn't part of the order I should keep out of it. If ever I had any interest in organising something similar, reading this thread and seeing the outcome has put me, ,and no doubt others too, off the idea for life.

Helmut, if you make some extra chisels and offer them for sale, I for one will consider buying them. Unless you are receiving fair compensation, or at the very very least having your direct out-of-pocket expenses covered, I will not add to the burden you are shouldering by becoming part of this farce.

I don't like stirring the pot without offering some solution, but frankly, I don't know how to fix this. I feel Helmut deserves something concrete (cash) for all of the trouble we went through. I'm sure he didn't ask for a donation lightly.

    Any suggestions?

monoman, I never do these batch orders with the intent of making any money from them. The first one started out with me asking some very basic questions about making plane blades, and it turned out that I and allot of other people learnt allot during the process. The Stanley plane blades were the third attempt, it was more difficult, and complex, but that is part of the challenge.

In terms of cost it probably cost me $20 in phone call's and maybe took up about 200 hours of my time, mostly sending emails and reading every post twice and responding when needed. So even if I got 3% out of the $9000 spent on running the batch order. I would be working for less then $1.35 an hour.

But at the end of the day, I do not care.

Members, get a quality item, we all learn something, we build a stronger community and I get to give back to others all that has been given to me over the years.

I am organizing another plane blades for wooden hand planes batch and a chisel batch, at the moment. I am waiting for everyone to get there Stanley blades, and then I will do another batch of them.

I only got two blades from the first Stanley order, and I have been using one in a Turner No. 4 1/2, I have been switching between the Turner and a Veritas Bevel Up Jack, for the last week. I have sharpened the Veritas A2 blades twice now, but my Turner with the M2 blades feels as sharp as it did at the start of the week. So I am very happy and am looking forward to picking up a few more M2 Plane Blades.

The other thing is that every time I pick up the Turner I see that Tombstone motif and I say to myself "I did that", and that is worth allot to me.
