Vertical Milling Slide - An Alternative
I have a Hercus slide and for in feed, used a micrometer carriage stop. It worked o.k.but I was never really confident about the accuracy or feel of the setup.
Then I chanced upon a Myford swivelling slide at a pawn shop for $95. It seemed strangely out of place surrounded by the chattels of desperation.
I modified the Myford's tee slot fitting to suit the Hercus compound slide. In use, it works extremely well with a sensitive feed. Locking the carriage and slightly tightening the compound slide gib screws, certainly provides a greater level of confidence while performing some milling operations on the lathe.
Myford fixed and swivelling slides are more common and usually far less expensive than Hercus slides. There are even knock off slides available in England along with Myford vise copies.
The Hercus on the other hand has proven invaluable because the attachments I have bought or made for it have enabled me to hold and position workpieces that I could not have done otherwise.

Bob, did you buy or make the indexer in the last photo?
If you made it, could I please have a drawing or sketch of it (wth dimensions would be even better). I really like the look of that.

Hello Joe,
The indexer is a genuine Hercus accessory. I am happy to furnish drawings if you are happy to wait until I return from France. I reckon the design could have been improved upon with the addition of a threaded nose on the spindle. Hercus supplied a 3 Morse arbor with a threaded nose to suit either the nine inch or 260 chuck. Knocked the possibility of holding long work on the head. With an adaptor, 3C collets can be used in the device.

Hercus Index Head
Joe
I noticed that "Australian Metalworking Hobbyist" in Melbourne sell these Indexing Heads from time to time @ $160 each. They appear to be out of stock at the moment, but I offered this as a possibility of obtaining one of these attachments.
I have one of these Hercus units & find it a very handy piece of equipment for use with 3C collets as Bob has noted.
regards
Bruce
