I'm really admiring this series Terry. I've only ever tried to do 'public' figure caraciture once (Prince Charles as the head of a walking stick) and I appreciate how hard it is to get right.
About this one... I can't see a pupil in Gorton's right eye. Was he blind in that eye or is it the photograph? (or has the right pupil rolled out of sight... he had a reputation as a drinker if I recall correctly).

As I recall Gorton had the use of both eyes. He had skin grafts after one of his crashes and used to joke he had is ass for a face.
As for drinking you might be thinking of one of his sucessors, Sneddon and McMahon. I always get them confused but one was a renowned drunk and womaniser.I'm just a startled bunny in the headlights of life. L.J. Young.

Thanks Whittling, but yes the pupil is there, it must be a combination of the light and my poor photo taking.

I seem to recall him doing a TV add for a brand of scotch back in the early to mid 70's. I didn't arrive in this country until Whittlam had the reigns so I'm a bit fuzzy on the details. Carvings great anyway!

Great work Schaf, really enjoying your caricature carvings. When my skills improve I have it on my list to attempt a caricature carving of Keith Richards, plenty of lines to work with Just a couple of questions on white beech, I've heard its great to carve but really hard to sand, do you use a sanding sealer first, sand it back, then oil it?
Cheers
Rob.

I used to draw caricatures a lot before the age of tenish and then not so much then very little, haven't given it much thought why that is but I get the feeling you can draw them really well Schaf, do you draw much?

Robthechisel, White Beech is nice to carve and sands quite OK but it does play havoc with the condition of your sandpaper, it is caused by the silicon present in the beech, and you are forever cleaning your paper.

Hi Springwater, the true answer is NO. Cannot draw for nuts. My only chance is by making waypoints from a centre line and cross line and joining the dots.
That is why I asked the question in the line drawing thread.
