    Default Maori Carving Taiaha

G'Day All, can anyone tell me what timber is used to carve authentic Maori taiaha? This is the hand held spear type of weapon about five or six feet long.

Thanks for the replies. Totara I've heard of but not Maire. However, I will put it on my Want List.

I took a look at that site Frank&Earnest, and I've bookmarked it. I read a good few of the articles as well as that one on the weapon. A weapon feared by the early English Marines that began the invasion, as they soon found they couldn't parry with the warriors that used it.

Mine may be from pinus crapiartus and hung on the wall after being stained I think.
