Protecting wooden signs from marine weather
G'day all,
We have a small property on the coast and I have recently carved a property sign from a slab of cypress approx 1.3m x .6m x 80mm. The recessed lettering has been painted.
From my experience building small boats, I assumed marine spar varnish (thinned with mineral turps), would be the best thing to give lasting weather protection to the slab. However after only 3 coats (had intended to give it 6) the boss (wife) has said that its coming out far too shiney.
Is anyone aware of a product I can put on the slab, either at this stage or when the final 3 coats have been applied, as a top coat that has a semi gloss or flat finish and that won't react to the spar varnish?
I don't really want to try to sand the whole thing off again at this stage....

Why dont you hit it with some 1200 wet and dry when you are finished with the coats?

I'm sure I read somewhere that the difference between a gloss and satin finish is a few minutes with steel wool.
The other day I described to my daughter how to find something in the garage by saying "It's right near my big saw". A few minutes later she came back to ask: "Do you mean the black one, the green one, or the blue one?".

Thanks for the advice guys. I want to hang the sign soon and marine spar takes AGES to really cure hard... hard enough to be responsive to rubbing with fine abrasive.
I eventually did what I probably should have done in the first place... went to the paint manufacturer and asked. They put me onto a compatable product that has satin sheen that can be painted right over the top of the existing coats of spar varnish and is (apparently) even better protection against weather.
I'll try to post a photo when I get the sign hung.
