Best Starting wood
Hi All,
I am getting more interested in carving and i was wondering what is the best types of wood to start to learn on?

Something softer than Tallowwood/Iron bark/Sydney Blue Gum etc. Huon Pine is good to carve, lovely smell too!
The main thing is that all the tools have to be sharp, especially the person weilding the implements, don't try it after a few or a bit tired. You spend the next time fixing all the little woops! moments .
So a softer pine, but nor crapiata as it is not suitable for anything!Pat

I have been to Trend Timbers in Mulgrave. Lots of blanks for wood turning there but also lots of shorts in a variety of timbers for carving. Very helpful staff and came away with a few different timbers to have a go with - kauri, jellutong etc.

Try jelutong or white beech.Even if you are still learning a good wood is stil the best wat to go.
