Default 8mm and 6mm shank router bits

I have a 1980s Ryobi router. It's unusual because it takes an 8mm-dia shank router bit.

There's an adaptor included. The instructions say this adaptor will take a 6mm-dia shank router bit.

So I have a router that will take either a 6mm or an 8mm bit. Very handy except that neither size bit is available either from Bugs Bunnings or from Carba-Tec.

    Hmmmmm!

I borrowed a one-quarter inch dia shank bit but it's too big being 6.35mm. It's gotta be 6mm folks.

I shall be grovellingly grateful to any fellow woodworker who could point me towards a supplier.

    Happy new year to all.

The big green Shed is not the only place to buy tooling,

check out your local tool shops or you could contact TRADE TOOLS over here in QLD I know that they have 6mm shank sets and Individual cutters.

P&N tools / SUTTON drills import and sell under EVACUT brand so these should give you some leads,.

European countries tend to be metric and use 6, 8 and 12 mm shanks, rather than the imperial fractional sizes common here.So ordering from over there might help. I suspect that CMT would do a metric shank range comparable to the imperial shank range available via Carbatech.

I know that the metric collets were standard for Triton for some Euro markets. Leigh Superjigs come with 8mm shank bits as standard and include a 1/2in to 8mm reducer, so you could get some straight and dovetail bits via Carbatech. The Aldi routers also come with 8mm and 1/4in collets but the bits they supply are 1/4 inch shank.

    Hope this helps a bit.

Festool sell 8mm router bits. Cutters (Router Bits) The only issue may be the price. Alternatively Carbitool might be able to make bits with the correct shank for you. You would need to enquire as to whether they can and at what price.
    Hope this helps.

I believe Lee Valley is about to make 8mm bits too.

LV do sell 8mm bits that is for use with the Leigh dovetail jig. Rather a limited number of cutters though as the cutters are used in combination with guide bushes.

Les, although they make 8mm for Leigh jigs I am not talking about them. I have heard they are to start an 8mm line to support the Festool routers (which they are now a dealer for). Could be just a rumour but that is what I heard.

I've bought Festool 10mm spiral upcuts on an 8mm shank for about A$53.00. Quite comparable with Carbitool and CMT.

6 and 8mm bits are readily available from European mail order houses
    eg Straight Cutters
however, it's probably cheaper to buy a new router

    Guy's,

Mail order from O/S should not be necessary , there are several suppliers and outlets for 6mm shank router bits in this country Suttons / P&N are just 1 .

All that is necessary is a little research , FESTOOL , while an excellent product , are differently top shelf in regards to quality & price,.

Carrols , Timbercon, may have 6mm bits , also any independent tool shops, .

Over here TRADE TOOLS import 6mm sets and have individual 6mm shank cutters in stock. Also TOTAL TOOLS .

If you do not have any joys , PM me and tell me what you need and I can source it over here and send to you.

Well that is good news. As I have the Festool OF1400 with 8mm collet, sometimes the 1/2" is not quite the cutter required. I do not particularly like 1/4" cutters unless absolutely necessary.

I think McJing sell a 8mm-1/4" adaptor. I have a similar old router that my dad gave me

Lee Valley now have a range of 8mm cutter available. Well priced and good quality. These will do well for the smaller routers where only 1/4" and 8mm collets are available. The 8mm cutters will be much more robust.
Thus the rumour from Groggy came true.

    Thanks for your interest Les.
I've not bought any 8mm bits yet. Each of the recommended sellers so far have wanted an arm and a leg.
I'll track down Lee Valley during the next week.

    Regards,

    Kevin
