Advice needed
Colleagues,
Apologies if this is not the correct forum but here goes...
I have just been offered and taken a job in Townsville and am in two minds what to do with the workshop here in Ballarat. As I see it I can either sell all and buy once I get settled 'up North' or get some haulage company to move it all lock stock and barrel. I have been offered some relocation expenses but I am not sure how much it will all cost. Does anyone have experience of moving stuff from one end of the country to the other and likely cost? I will try some local firms tomorrow but have not had the chance to do much searching having just got off the plane.
Are there any woodies from the region who read this forum ? If so what type of wood is there up there?
Regards
Mike

Try Downs removals from Hamilton they service SW vic and regularly go to Qld.

The trick is to get a back load deal. Find out the Banana bending removalists in your new home town and see if you can get cheap space on their return trip (hopefully empty but for your stuff)

There's no wood in Townsville, but there are a few guys on the forum who'll be able to fill you in. Where are you when we need you JackE??
Send JourneymanMick a PM, he's had a bit of gear shipped round the place to FNQ, and may be able to steer in the right direction.
Cheers,

You say you just got a job in Townsville..will the company that you are working for help in the relocation costs? Cant hurt to ask..
Townsville well the is no real wood that you can go and cut down but for a healthy price you can get any wood you desire from
Bunnos of course
Bootle timbers
Dale and Meyers
Parkside timber and hardware
Cleveland Stacks
On the moving bit we moved from mount isa and the company just put all our stuff in a seatainer and stored it in townsville until we wanted it. We packed everything ourselves (borrowed boxes from friends who had just moved into town) much cheaper this way. I think the cost from memory was $2500 with insurance. but it was 4 years ago!
This probably helps little but i little is all i got (so my missus keeps tellin me!)
Best of luck in the move
What job did you get?

A few years ago when we moved we heard of a way of doing it, that I considered seriously at the time.
That was a mob that used shipping containers. They'd drop a container at your front door step. You'd load it up with all your furniture etc yourself, then, they'd pick it up and drive it to your new house, where they put it on the ground, you'd have to unload yourself. Given a day or something like that to do it, after which they'd pick up the empty container.........point is the idea saves you over 1000 bucks or something like that.
We didn't do it only because a mate of mine said I could use his truck. Which was even cheaper.

If you go the container route, be sure to put aside some beer money for your mates who will help you pack (and unpack!) the thing.
Done more than a few containers have I. Not a quick and easy proposition for two or even three people with random stuff and not much organisation to put the stuff that comes out.

Hi Mike
I have done four moves in the last three years with work.
My only advice is dont try and do it on the cheap. Unless of course you have cheap stuff and you are happy for it to get damaged.
Using a reputable company with proper insurance saves you getting burned.
From nth coast nsw to hobart was about $12000 for two containers but this includes getting across the pond. There is a shortage of containers at the moment so you may have trouble getting one if you do it all yourself.
There is a company out of darwin that does the drop off container and then pick it up again after youve loaded it but I cant remember the name. Really helpful bloke though. I will try and find the number.
cheers

G'day Mike,
I've moved around a bit too. The older I get the more I get professionals to do
Cheap is not always the best option but it pays to shop around. Try and get copies of the Townsville newspaper or try and access it on the net. A while back I had a heap of machinery to send to Romsey and found a one man company from Bendigo who was looking for a load to go back down from Brissy. Great bloke, great service and a great price.
Good luck on your move

Mike,
Compare the cost of the item if sold and the cost to ship it. If that adds up close to a new or replacement cost then sell it and save some grief. Don't sell the little stuff though, it will cost you a fortune to replace.
Hey, you're just up the road, sell it to me! Sell it to me!
I should add that Ivan in Oz's advice is spot on in my experience. I am up to move number 38 (? I think) and I have a very low opinion of the day release workers they call removalists.
There are some reputable companies around, but it will pay you to video everything you own in 360deg. Not only will they argue that you had it in the first place, but they will argue its condition if you manage to prove it was shipped.
Be prepared for the "that was broken when we packed it line". Remember to thank them for packing the spilled fluid too, that takes extra effort.
For extra care, show them your gun collection and mention you're itching to get some practice in when you arrive at the other end.
