Silky Oak
Hello all, I have a couple silky oak slabs drying in the shed ceiling and I was thinking about building a country style garden gate. I hate trying to work with old hardwood and was thinking of using the silky oak. Do you think it can handle the weather (Brisbane) if well primed and painted? Cheers
ps this is my first post I hope I've done it right!

Hi Broken Tooth. Go to the bathroom and wash your mouth out with soap !. Painting Silky Oak & making a garden gate out of it is just too heart wrenching to contemplate.
These days Silky Oak is considered by most woodworkers as a beautiful 'RARE' timber. Hard to find any timber yards that have any left in stock. It really should be saved for a fine woodworking project. like a cabinet or box, even a nice picture frame. Get some treated pine for the gate, it will last 10 times longer out in the weather than Silky Oak. Here's a pic of a Silky Oak picture frame I did the other day.I never forget anything I remember !!

As an addition to the seven deadly sins, you have just added the eigth one.
I am crying tears of blood just thinking of such a sacriledge
My old house had silky oak framing and we saved every tiny little bit, no matter how many nailholes were in it.
You have pure gold there.
Cheers
