how to build a low platform bed
hello all,
im new to the forum but have done some simple wood projects (poker table, simple cabinet, etc). my question, whats the best way to build a low platform bed (example attached). im thinking frame it with 2 x 4's, top it off with 4 x 8 plywood (birch?) and incase all 4 sides with strips? finish it off with a stain? but what should i use to make the 'legs' out of? looks like its just small strips of wood but im afraid that may not be strong enough. opinions?
thanks in advance.

What you need to build is 2 torsion boxes and joint them together.
http://www.geocities.com/bawanewslet...orsionbox1.pdf
With a torsion box design the ribs and skin combine to form a very stiff, strong, light structure. You wont need to frame it with anything as heavy as 4x2s, 4x1s will be plenty stong enough, and the ply skin will brace the whole thing. You could even use strips of ply for the ribs. I would use a nice band of sold timber around the outside though, and rebate the top skin into it. Then you can put a small roundover or bevel on the lip, your shins may thank you for it later
For the base, just rip strips of ply for the ribs, nice stuff for the outside, then skin it with any cheap ply, it wont be seen.
It will be light enough to move around, but it wont fall apart
Cheers

Hi and welcome mjuevos,
The bed in the link you provided shows a band of exposed timber that protrudes outside of the matress. I know these are very trendy but I'd be afraid that I would always be bashing the #$#* out of my legs on the things. Do any of the members own a bed like these? and are my fears unjustified?
myuevos If you already have your mind made up about this style I apologise in advance for wasting your time.
Regards
