MDF would not be my choice for the piece shown. It be very heavy and the shelves would have to stiffened with wood battens otherwise they would bow. I would not use 32 mm mdf for any of the parts. The thick shelves could be made as torsion bokes or 19mm mdf stiffened with trim. Flat mdf will bow and it is very weak in tension.

Assuming you are not using a laminate you can obtain a faux marble effect with paint. details are given in many books such as The complete guide to Wood Finishes by Derrick Crump published by Simon and Shuster but many other books cover the subject. Be warned they normally only devote a few pages to it and it takes practice.

I'm currently making a TV cabinet 3.2m long x 600mm deep x 600mm high and I'm using MDF - 32mm for the top and 18mm everywhere else. I'll be finishing (spraying) with a red coloured satin enamel oil based paint. I will post some pictures in a seperate post when I get it finished.

As I guy who has seen more TV units than most, I have never seen one unit made out of MDF that didnt sag due to the feet of the TV being in from the sides. So for a standard glass tube set , reinforce the top.

If MDF is your thing build it with that but you could use a piece of square tube under the TV shelf and dummy the front.

Dont want to put you off but theres a lot of design work in that. Theres router work, table saw work, and you got to figure out how the top holds on to the side units. If you never built something before this is a very tough project to start
