Default Things to see (and buy) in Singapore / Malaysia / Indonesia

    Hi,

I am hobbyist woordworker living in France. I will be in singapore for 3 weeks in september. i plan to go diving in north of malaysia for a few days, but apart from that I don't have any plan.

So it came to me that this part of the world may be a good place to buy some macassar ebony, and maybe visit woodworkers or people who can make good tools (planes, chisels, ...) or guitars.

I tried googling for a week or so, but did not found much trustable information. Do you know of any supplier, hobbyist, shop or workshop dealing with wood or woodworking, which is worth visiting in malaysia, java, singapore or bali ?

    Best Regards,
    John.

    Hi John.

This subject has been discussed a few times on this forum and we have had a few locals from the areas you mentioned on this forum.

For a start I would do a search on this forum typing in the words Singapore and Malayasia. Have a good read and then come back and ask some more questions. I have been down this road and thought like you it might be a good place to get some woodworking tools as my daughter is in Singapore nearly every second week.

    Good luck with your search.

    Hi,

I've searched, and re-searched after your post, but all I oculd find is some general advice that singapore is not the best place to buy tools, and something I d'ont really remember about toilet paper availability in malaysia

So to give more precies questions :

-does someone know of a trusty place to buy wood (with real cites papers, ok fulmigation and door to door shipping) to buy 1 or 2 cubic meter of wood (rosewood and monkey pod mainly, a bit of macassar if available)
-does someone know of a place where people make good tools or music instrument (maybe to buy one or too, but at least to chat, see how they work, take pictures, offer a beer, ...)

For both, the place has to be "around singapore", which means malaysia, java, bali, sumatra, and even thailand maybe.

    thanks you,
    John.

Sorry to appear to make you do a search. I hope that others on here are more helpful than I can be.

I had no luck and have done a fair bit of research but was told that their is not much woodworking activity done by the local community. Those that live in the towns and have employment usually live in a high rise apartment.

I do have a contact in Malaysia who is a Wood Carver. I think he is an Accountant by profession. Even though I have not met him we have sent E Mails to each other because we have a common interest in Wood Carving.

If you like i can contact him to get permission to pass on his forum name so you can converse with him. It might get you started to look in the right direction. He was having difficulty with tools and gets most of them from Australia or the United States.

    Pete
