Camphor Laurel
Hey Fellas! May I have a bit of a skite? Aw! Go on, just a bit?
The photo is if a project that evolved in my head and was transported to the finished article with various changes along the way.
I can work to plans but often forego the set out, staid performance of the expert to just taking a plunge.
My first big problem with this one is that I had only short bits of Camphor Laurel that were never going to be matchable, and when I put them side by side the mind went bonkers trying to find rhyme or reason for all the swirls, colours and direction of grain.
I have spent the day thicknessing the boards to 19mm and it was late when I started to put bits together. Trying to get some systematic pattern was a hopeless idea, so I went to bed and dreamt about it.
Next morning, without any real confidence I tried some rose wood strips between each length of camphour, and after awhile it looked darn good. I asked my mate, a really good woodie, and he agreed.
The dimensions of this piece is 1500 long X 550 deep X 800 high. I have more draws than I need but I had to fill in the bottom with something.
I surrounded the two levels (Top and under shelf) with Rose wood, and the finish was clear Mirratone.
Thanks for looking
BB

I reckon it looks pretty good. You've got boards running every which way there, how have you constructed it to allow for differential movement of the wood and expansion across end grain of those panels with rosewood ends?
Cheers

Wow, looks very funky. Like mic said, you have done some interesting things with the grain. Nice work

Time will tell, as most Woodies are always concerned with the variable movement in Camphor Laurel.
I am relying on the age of the timber as I received it, and was happy to have my mate tell me that the moisture test that he did on some cut pieces showed a very good result. It is my understanding that the Camphor was at least 25 years old, in the rough sawn state.
I could not see any green, a good indication of moisture, in any piece.
The two long surfaces are biscuit jointed, nothing in the longitudinal construction is fixed, and the standard slot and clamp system is applied to allow for movement.
Again the Rosewood ends and frontings are biscuit jointed, and again I am relying on the dryness of the timber.
I am reasonably confident that it will stay together.
Thank You
BB
PS: This has nothing to do with the subject, but I had to pass it on. ON the ABC News tonight I saw that a Brisbane flood proof road costing 4.3 million dollars was destroyed by rain.......Well it was only flood proof, not rain proof...be kind.

Usually when you protect something from rain you put a roof on it.
