    Default Chessboard Wood

    Ive decided to make a chessboard and pieces, but i don't know much about different timbers, i was wondering whats a good light and dark hardwood to use. I dont want the light wood to look white though.

    Thanks in advance Michael

    Jarrah or Aussie cedar and silver ash go well.

    Well i was thinking of Aussie Cedar and Silver Ash but it also depends on how much (or little) i can get because i also want to make the pieces out of the same wood.

    If you want cheap/common woods, then Tas Oak and Jarrah or Merbau make a good combination.

    I'd stay away from Redgum as it tends to want to move too much, even in such small pieces as used for a chess-board. I've built a couple and they all developed splits across the Redgum squares.
    I may be weird, but I'm saving up to become eccentric.

    Agree. I've used those two on an end grain chopping board and they look very nice.

    Im goin to stay away from huon pine, even though it looks good apparently its not very easy to work with on a lathe and because im not very good i may not have enoguh time to do all the peices.

    Huon cuts like butter on a lathe.

    Maybe so but we have very dodgy lathes and equiptment at school and I would probably cut too deep and break the peices, im really not very good at all on a lathe.

    With Huon I managed a thin bowl on an ordinary MC900.

    I find it a very forgiving timber, except when it comes to machine sanding.

    44Ronin, that is a blatant gloat.

    Lucky sod.

    I found it at a big box hardware store by digging through their timber racks labelled "hardwood" ;

    I'm not sure where you can get it in the UK, try an exotic wood dealer. I know they sell curly eucalyptus knife blanks in the states, so hopefully someone should sell this wood in the UK

    That looks great, but it still depends on what i can get my hands on, im still thinking jarrah and silver ash though, and i might try huon pine because we just happen to have some at school, ill see if i can make a good pawn out of it and then choose if i like it.
