If you're going to use a solvent to clean up epoxy, you may as well go with metho - does the job just as well as acetone.

And of course, if you're using epoxy, wear vinyl gloves and make sure it's well ventilated.

Which design did you go with?

Oh, BTW... don't listen to toolin' or anyone else that says use acetone on your skin.. it breaks down the fatty layer (or something with dermis in it) and let's the epoxy bad stuff just shoot straight in! If you've ever met anyone who is sensitised to epoxy, you'd treat it VERRRRy carefully. No need to be afraid of it, just treat it appropriately!

    Thanks P (weird place this isn't it....calling you P)

Sounds like I should go with just using Alex's Metho idea now.

Apologies by the way. I just assumed you got one of those emails when a thread you posted in gets a new post.

I posted a pic in that old thread. Its attached in there....

Very dark pic....so you wouldn't see the mistakes ...no, everythings clean.... pretty standard design the misses wanted though. But I'll still keep your designs in mind. One there in particular I'll definetly use on a cabinet in the future I think.

If you can fit masking tape each side of the joint, filament tape should work better, as it's less likely to tear away. For cleaning glue from self, easiest way is to not glue self; I wear disposable latex or nitrile gloves (aka proctologist gloves) whenever I'm using epoxy, CA, etc. (OK, almost whenever).

No need for apologies, I'm away quite a bit, so can't keep up if I subscribe to threads. Unfortunately it means I do miss the odd thread or two that I should really know about!

Thanks for keeping us updated, and I look forward to seeing the cabinet too! I'd love to see something with Mongolian window (the sole pic in one of my posts earlier in that thread) if you ever get inspired!

    Cheers,

Tape all of your glue joints.

When you make the joint, the glue squeezes out onto the tape. Then it is just a matter of peeling the tape away.

Thanks Roverdisc. Feel it be too much effort to tape them all up. There really small cope and stick joints.....and there could be near a hundred of them.....I don't know how I'd get the tape sitting well around these small moulding joints, following the moulding through the steps etc.....take forever to do it right I feel.....no doubt the glue will find its way under the tape I thought. ....a quick way to wipe it away I thought be better.

But doesn't epoxy harden too well for the tape idea to work ?.....I mean, if you pull at the tape, won't the tape just tearout around the epoxy squeeze out. Thats the kind of experience I've had with epoxy.

Strangely enough, I spent a while this morning cleaning up some taped epoxy joints...

Apricot, when I use tape (blue painters' stuff, if it's relevant) I wipe any excess squeeze-out off the tape with some paper towel, then when the epoxy has cured the tape comes off very easily. It's stiff and crackly, for lack of a better description. Any bits that have a bit of epoxy bulk that I missed tend to lift off pretty easily with some gentle persuasion from a razor blade.

You should read Michael Storer's pages on using epoxy for boat building - lots of good tips here e.g. using a snaplock pastic bag for mixing the stuff in and then cutting a small corner cut off to apply the glue.

The boatbuilding guys are way ahead on using epoxy!
Really old thread resurrection, but I LOVE this tip. Just like icing a cake.

Don't use metho to clean hands use barrier cream and nitrile gloves to protect against exposure.
