I think the Aventos HK lift hinge, mounted on its side, might do what you want

see page 16 and following in this document http://d1.blum.com/BEC003/kla0033-ep...4aof_%24v1.pdf
Thanks Ian. Is this the one? I reckon this would come close to doing the job. I'll see if I can get hold of a pair initially.
It will certainly save some work. I'll have to buy you a beer for that effort!!
    Thanks again.

That's a nice way of mounting. Almost totally hidden. I guess that's the problem with doing the not so conventional.
Thanks again for the tip on what's available.
Or you plane the an angle on the door so the trailing edge clears. You will never know when the doors are shut

that hinge looks pretty crude compared to the Blum version.

which ever way you ultimately decide on, you really should try and get some weight and thickness out of your doors

as far as I can tell from the brochures, the struts are part of the mechanism

can't help with the cost, but being Blum ...

Elan Jacobs may have an idea of the cost, or you could contact Lincoln Sentry. Also, with hopper doors, you might be able to reduce the door count to 3 and make use of the existing dividers

No idea how much the Blums cost, but they won't be cheap. They also have motorized versions that open when you press the door and close with a button. They do work well, but they're even more not cheap.

The technical brochure is here: http://d1.blum.com/BEC003/baa-avttech2013_ep_dok_bau_$sen-au_$aof_$v1.pdf you'll need to have a look through to decide which style you want and how wide you can go with the doors before you hit the weight limit

That's a good idea Dave. It would simplify things a lot. 3mm over 30mm wouldn't be obvious I wouldn't think. Thanks for the tip

I'm kinda stuck with the way the doors are Ian. I've got red ironbark for the rails and styles (recycled from the house framing) which is pretty much dressed and old fence palings for the infill panels.

Karen gives the hopper door idea the thumbs down, but it would still be interesting to find out the costing on those blum units.

    If you're cruising eBay ...
Blum Aventos HK hinges -- which you'd mount 90 degrees to "normal" (on the top and bottom) NEW Blum Aventos HK Lift Mechanism | eBay about $150 a pair. Ouch

I just found these in the UK Ian. They look like complex little units.

Those or the Aventos HK units seem to do what you asked for in your first post.
The cost (per pair) doesn't seem too excey, but across 10 doors it will add up.
(Of course you would mount them on their sides and probably need to use a jig to align them vertically)

I just found these add on units for hopper door style. Not that I'll be using them, but I thought it worth while sharing what's available. Certainly can't complain about the price and no gas struts required.

Don't know how they can fit hydraulics in there????? More likely to be a big clock type spring, l'd say.
