Deck structure help
Hi folks,
this has probably been asked a million times, and i HAVE tried a search, but couldnt find an answer.
My question is... I plan to put a spa on top of a wooden deck. Problem is.. how do I determine the ability of the current deck to support the 2.5 - 3.0 tonne spa, and how do I determine how to strengthen my existing deck to support it if required?
Of course I have all the relevant measurements available, as in the attached document.
Hope some of you good folk can help me here.
regards
Mike

Spa contains 1700 ltrs, (1.7 tonnes) PLUS
Dry Weight 350 kg (0.35 tonnes) PLUS say 6 people @ 80 kg each
People 480 kg (0.48 tonnes)
for a total of 2.53 tonnes.
I do intend to put an extra joist in, and support it on an additional 75*75 gal post. This would run in the middle of where the spa would sit, but it is a joist rather than a bearer, and the joist would be heavier than the current ones, the new one would be 125*75. The new post would be at the front, ie, fartherest from the house founds as in the diag, and would of course be in line with the existing 75*75 gal posts.
In my note, I said 2.5 - 3.0 tonnes to allow for a little extra, normally there would only be 2 or maybe 4 people in it, so total weight would be 2.21 - 2.37 tonnes.Last edited by ml09616; 29th January 2009 at 06:42 PM. Reason: additional info

ml,
Mucking around with decking and weight just aint worth it in my humble opinion.
I would suggest employing the services of either a certified builder or an architect to look at the job and then advise what needs to be done.
Having built a number of decks and pergola's I know from experience that each one needed to be built differently for the given situation and giving advice without actually seeing the site just isnt on.
Once you get height into a deck, you have to consider how resistant the structure will be to not only the weight sitting on top but also the stress that side to side movement that nearly 2 tonne of water sloshing around will put on the deck.
Hope this may be of help to you.
Ross.
