Design required for amazing infinite motion model
Have a look at the attached video, and see if you can work out the following:
1. the curvature and size of the curved slopes
2. the diameter and weight of the ball
3. the strength of the toroidal magnet
and finally
4. how to fix the string to the magnet in an invisible connection, and make it disappear for part of the pendulum motion

to quote some of teh FB comments
I do not know what is more surprising, people think this is real or those who are trying to explain how it can happen ...
These animations are boring and a total waste of time. Looks like some undergraduate code assignment.

Actually, ian, I think that they are very clever animations, great to watch. They are so lifelike as to fool quite a few people, and far better than the 2D ones I produced years ago for shooting a ball out of a cannon for a Physics lesson.

Dengue, you studied physics it seems, No such thing as perpetual motion. The energy to drive it has to come from somewhere,

I just appreciate the animation for what it is - a very clever piece of work by a talented computer-aided designer. I like it I cannot understand people getting all het up about it.

When I first looked at the video (giving it the benefit of the doubt and assuming it's real for just a few seconds) there are so many variables that make this virtually imposable. The weighting and balance on the ball would have to perfect (a groove in the table would make it slightly more realistic for a microsecond) then consider the magnetic properties in play, the swinging magnet would have to be extremely weak, as would the ball in order to stop them pulling together or influencing the rate of pendulum motion, the spinning magnet poles in the ball would either repel or cause a collision every time, and surface friction between the table and the ball could never be constant - there are other problems but for now and finally, there is no way the magnet pendulum can over come it's gravitational, frictional and energy losses that it suffers in supposedly keeping the ball in constant motion - not possible.

Cool video! Why is everyone assuming it's supposed to be a magnetic toy? In the absence of friction it would run forever if the periods of the ball and pendulum match just on gravity.
OTOH, it would be at least theoretically possible to set up as a driven system - driven pendulum toroidal solenoid energising at the bottom to give the ball a little kick every time it went through. Be easier to roll the toroid in a curve and put the ball in a loop.

One needs to realize that magnets are not perpetual.

In order for perpetual motion to happen, you need to break the laws of physics. Can't be done.

I think a few missed the point Dengue. Perpetual motion is real btw. When someone more smarter than I figures it out, I'll be right there ready to scream out "told ya so" in a high pitched annoying voice and yes, I realise I said "more smarter" cause I r rooly gud at english and can reed gud 2

That's ridiculous. One needs to consider the evidence. On the one hand some archeologists suspect St Nicolas is buried under a church in Turkey and died hundreds of years ago. However that's little more than speculation.
Whereas there are thousands of sightings and reports of St Nick being alive and well every year. Furthermore these sightings are very regular being in or around December each year. Plus these sightings are very widespread and reported by all kinds of reputable people. Most compelling of all is that these sightings of Santa are actually increasing in frequency.
Hence a scientific study of the available data must conclude that Santa is alive and well.

But physics is wrong. If we go full circle, back to the original post, it shows perpetual motion is real therefore the laws of physics are wrong therefore Santa exists. - So there

what would a physicist know...
Santa is a time lord, who left Galafrie well before The Doctor and his sleigh is a TARDIS.
Given both those facts, it's a trivial exercise top carry all the presents -- the inside of the sleigh expands to accommodate the number of packages requited.
and there should be no need to explain how a time lord can travel backwards through time when required to reach the number of children who need visiting on Christmas Eve.regards from Alberta, Canada
