English Oak veneer
I am doing up a room under the house adn I need some advice. The brickwork is to be covered with gyrock so that's not a problem. There are 2 big steel beams along the roof that have already been covered in and wallpapered over many years ago. It is a box effect over the beams. I want to change them to give the appearance of old English Oak beams. Is there a veneer I can get to do it or is there a better way. Any advice would be appreciated.
Thanks
Greg

The human eye is seldom decieved by boxed in fake beams. The effect can be had by building a box of the desired wood and trying to match the grain to look like a solid beam. It only works if the beam dimentions suit the scale of the building. For instance 300mm x 300mm beam may look ok in a castle in europe but in a suburban house in oz look way out of place. This is just my take but for under a house I would be happy with the steel beam being the feature.

John

I agree that it's hard to recreate something that looks real old like Oak beams.
However some years ago I was sat in a modern hotel bar that managed it. They had managed to source some cast fibreglass beam covers that looked the real thing (until I tapped them).
No idea where you would source such a thing but might be worth thinking about.Dragonfly

Thanks. I hadn't thought about fibreglass but now you mention a bar I think there is some in the Pig and Whistle Inn (English replica pub) in town. I will check it out.
