External Form Ply
G'day,
I want to build a replica old red telephone box, and feel hardwood would be far too expensive, and was wanting to know what alternatives I could use, pine, properly sealed?, treated pine..expensive and can warp?, what about form ply external?...how water proof is that stuff, any clues welcome, unless anyone want to save me the hard work and put me on to a cheap original...lol, if there is such a thing...cheap.
Thanks

Ply would end up with too may end/edge grains vunerable.
KD hardwood would be the go with t&g for the back wall, floor and roof .
there is a hell of a lot of joinery in a phone box & all that glass to be set.
I don't think "cheap" pine would stand the stress of holding the door up.
There is more to a phone box than meets the eye.
best of luckAny thing with sharp teeth eats meat.
Most powertools have sharp teeth.
People are made of meat.
Abrasives can be just as dangerous as a blade.....and 10 times more painfull.

Form ply -telephone box
Leeton,
Toss in some more clues on the intended application and use . IF it is internal or not. Really if the intended use is external, form ply could be the go if you sealed the end grain areas and cover them with a suitable hardwoowood frame moulding they could be rebated over the sheet ends and sides to make a half way decent replica.
I have seen large sheets of used form ply at the demolishers who obviously buy it when the large contractors are finished with it. A couple of years back it went for $60 a sheet . That was 2400 x 1200 x 19.
Anyways too many people have phone boxes , how about a Tardus complete with sound effects.

structural ply with A bond (same adhesive as marine) is quite stable for exterior applications. I have had some scraps outside in full weather for over two years without any separation. I don't see any durability problems if you finish it with an exterior grade paint. However, ply is not cheap.
Cheers

hey leeton
we deal with the old red telephone boxes. if you are interested you can call me on 0421904378 to discuss further.
some are expensive and some aren't so bad considering like you said to replace the hardwood you are looking at a small fortune nowdays especially in the larger sized cuts they usually have to be specially milled. you are better off buying an original for about $2000 complete and doing your own resto on them because the wood has been well seasoned already what better test for outdoor use is there apart from being outdoors and used heavily for over 60-80 years? as another bloke said in the forum there is alot more than meets the eye with the old phone boxes trust me.
