Filling holes
I am trying to fill a lot of borer and bug holes up to 1cm in width using builders bog. The smell of the stuff is making me live up to my name and I was wondering what the other products are like?
I've been colouring the bog with builders oxide and would keep doing the same for other products. I know some of you use Diggers Casting and Embedding resin - what is it like?
Is it clear or yellowish?
Can it take colouring?
Does it go opaque when sanded?
What sort of working time do you get and how long to fully harden?
If anyone has a pic of a finished job with clear and/or black it would be appreciated.
(EDIT: I have done a few searches)

I use Agnews water putty in preference to bog.
Its a dry powder and you can tint it.
Once set its waterproof sets hard and its fast setting.
No smell at all.

That's it, its got a pine type color to it, looks ok in pine.
For other timbers just add some water base tinters or dry pigments.

$3.95 for 500g! That is a lot cheaper than the builders bog. Think I'll hunt some down and try it .

No sure how well you can see it but the large gum line at the back of the picture is filled with diggers epoxy colured with wattle wood stain. Don't put too much stain or it takes too long to go off. Just enough to colour. Tea spoon in a 100mls ish maybe.

Diggers casting resin can be tinted or dyed, provided you use the right products, but stays crystal clear on its own.
Epoxy, fibreglass resin etc does go yellow or milky in time, but are fine if you are tinting.Neil____________________________________________Every day presents an opportunity to learn something new

Thanks for the answers folks. I have been sanding the bog today and it turns very gray, but when wiped with metho it returns to black so hopefully when I finish it the colour will be ok.

IMHO All bogg puttys etc look like crap and just draw attention to the imperfection you are trying to hide.
I find that filling holes by inserting (with force if needed) small pieces of the same wood or another if the contrast works in the piece and fixing them in place with CA glue or epoxy is a better solution.
There are some interesting ideas of how to do this in Sam Maloof's book if you have a copy.

I bought some of the Agnews water putty today. Being water based it is easier to prepare and I am dyeing it with paint stain from Bunnies. The colour match is pretty good and I only need a touch of it to get the colour deep enough.
It fills all right but is a bit 'gritty' as it starts to dry. sanding seems pretty easy, but since it is so cold the stuff is taking ages to dry. It doesn't dry as hard as the builder's bog but should do fine. It cost $9 for the kg.

give it a bit of time (overnight) it dries very hard, and sands to a fine smooth finish

I would also be interested to see what others have done with tinted filler. Particularly anything that is compatible with a tung oil finish. Don't limit to that though, any photos, comments and finish types that went with them would be a worthwhile resource as like Groggy I have done a few searches with little coming up.
Cheers,
Mike

OK Groggy, you have a lathe now... turn some plugs, glue them in & sand them off.
Cliff.
If you find a post of mine that is missing a pic that you'd like to see, let me know & I'll see if I can find a copy.
