Default Finish for Shop Made Hand Tools

What would be the best finish for shop made handtools made out of wood. For example:

    Mallet
    Marking Gauge

I am a high school woodwork teacher and I get my students to design and make both these tools (et al). We currently finish with an Organoill product but at the rate they go through it, it is far from economical. And it really doesnt do justice to some of the quality work they produce.

    Any thoughts?

    G'day.

The finish depends a lot upon whether the item is going to be ornamental of functional & I can’t get my head around an ornamental Mallet or Marking Gauge.

If it’s going to be functional, it needs a good durable finish.

I’d use Rustin’s Danish Oil, Penetrol Wood Oil, or the Organ Oil that you are currently using.

I can’t think of a finish that would be more economical yet do a better job…
Maybe a polyurethane product but I stopped using polyurethane years ago.

Try posting this question in the Finishing Forum.

hows about some linseed oil, its easy, cheap, adds lustre to the grain, protects from rot etc and relatively harmless to the user.
