Anyone bought equipment from overseas?
Hi
I am seriosuly contemplating buying an aftermarket fence from overseas.
Has anyone done this before and if you have can you PLEASE tell me who you used for shipping.
At the moment I am looking at getting a fence for approx $300 but the shipping is just as much?
Any advice would be appreciated.
Many thanks

Yep done it many times. My biggest order was 17 kg of tool steel pieces some up to 36" long, cost me about $100 - but that was 2 years ago.
I use USPS (not UPS).
- some companies will not use USPS
- Large dimensions present a problem for USPS. I don't think they will ship anything longer than 36"
- goto ircalc.usps.gov and you can calculate for yourself what the cost will be. There is a lot of fine print to read about sizes and weights etc but it does work out about right.
Cheers

Arr, have you considered the JET xacta fence? I have one and it is around $350. Give your local JET dealer a call.

Thanks heaps guys and Wongo, how accurate is that fence?
Would you say it would be comparable to Carbatech's heavy duty fence?

It is a strong unit. It is fully adjustable so accuracy is not an issue.
Can't really answer your second question because I don't know what CT's one is like.Visit my website at www.myFineWoodWork.com

I just ranger a dealer in Perth and they have a 32" version for $250
Surely anything is better than the piece of junk I have at the moment lol )

I got it around 2-3 years ago. $250 rings a bell too. Must upgrade my memory on of these days.

32" is the length of the pipe that it runs on, measured from the saw blade, not the length of the fence itself. You may want to see if they have just the fence as a spare part for less, then you can either use the original tube or just go to your local steel merchant & buy a few meters of rectangular tube & drill your own mounting holes - then you can have rails as long as you want - 52" past the blade will let you cut a 1200x2400 sheet of ply into two 1200x1200's by ripping against the fence.
If they will only sell you the fence & rails, you can buy the tube for less than the difference in price between the 32" & 52" fences, then give the pipe a coat of auto spray paint that matches your saw.

Sounds like good advice to me. I have often thought about upgrading my fence but haven't got around to it yet. Might investigate the JET when I can afford the $$s
Reality is no background music.

The Jet is an excellent fence. There are also others around, like the C_T mentioned above.
Trouble with buying a single unit from OS is the cost. Not worth it!
