Let glue set then screw ?
Hi all, sorry if this is in the wrong area, my first post.
I have allways wondered if it is best to align and glue a joint together then wait till glue is set before screwing. My thinking is by glueing first you do not get any slight movement when adding screws for strength later. Is there any difference in the final strength of joint if you wait untill the glue is dry ?
Thanks

Hi Karri and welcome.
As an apprentice, what I was always told in those situations where I challenged the 'accepted' way of doing things was 'All the new ways have been tried'. This was often followed by a kick in backside, ah the good old days
Eventually you come to realise that if someone else has to take responsibility for your output then they get to decide how it should be done. When you take responsibility for your output almost any method is okay if it gives you the result you need without compromising the strength/safety/aesthetics of the product.

Yeah...screws (or airgunned nails) are a nice self aligning alternative to clamps.

I have done this exact same thing today, made a holding jig that I have just glued at end of day and will put screws in tomorrow, at one corner it is held with tape and the other joints rubbed together, if I had of tried to screw or nail it it would have moved, it can also help to stop splitting in timber prone to splitting.
