Hammock stand maker wanted!
Hi there,
my woodworking skills have really not improved much since I used to cut out shaped jigsaw animals when I was about 9!!
So that is why I wanted to ask for a bit of help from the skilled woodworkers on this site.
I've recently started up an online store selling hand-woven Mexican hammocks and other various products. However, I'm having a bit of trouble sourcing good quality hammock stands. I'm not too keen on importing from China, as I can't really check out the quality and feel of the stands prior to placing a large order, and would much rather go local. So I was hoping someone here knows of a local Australian company, that could possible make hammock stands for me (Sydney based would be good, but anywhere else is not a problem). Or even an individual with a bit of spare time, that could make a few frames for me.
You can view the hammocks here (http://www.hammocksaustralia.com.au) to get any idea of the product it would need to suit. The hanging distance needs to be approx 4m, with the strength to hold atleast 200kg. Also, if the stands could be broken down into pieces for shipping that would make things a lot easier also, weather resistance etc. I can provide more specifics if need be. Current retail prices of wooden frames I have seen are around the $300 mark, I have had people tell me they would pay up to $400 for a really nice looking, top quality frame.
I don't need large factor production or anything like that, just a few to get started, and hopefully it would lead to a continual increase in demand, especially as summer comes back around.
Thanks for your time, I apologize in advance if this post is inappropriate here. But hopefully someone can help me out, feel free to reply here, PM me, or contact me through the website.

Hi Mike,
Quite a unique product you are after. You may find it a whole lot easier to get them build here in Australia and somewhere relatively close to your warehouse. This way you will have greater control of quality. Don't want any dodgey stand especially since people's backs are the first thing to hit if something goes wrong! Also if you are only ordering in a small quantity the cost of transportation will be expensive due to weights/size.
Hope someone on this forum i able to steer you in the right direction in the way of a suitable contact. I like the simplicity of your website. Good luck with it all.
Cheers,
Oz

Hi Mike.
I like your hammocks.
The Lumber Bunker stand looks very neat.
A while ago I made this stand for a friend. It is about 3m long because that is what she wanted.
It is a bit heavy but very strong. The ends are easily removed which is handy for storage.
You are welcome to use the idea or I could make a few to get you started.Scally

Avoca Hammock stand
I did play around with the angles a bit.
Not sure what they ended up at.
I might have a few notes somewhere.
The original is just down the road from you - on a nice lady's beach verandah at Avoca.
I could easily arrange for you to have a look at it.Scally

Hi Scally,
thanks very much for the picture of the frame. Looks great, and the hammock, looks just like ours also!
It's probably just a bit small for us however, I notice they have tied the arms of the hammock to shorten it's length (they spread out to just over 4m). That's probably idealy for what they want as looks like they are using it inside, so nice and compact.
Lumberbunkers ones do look great, but I've just got a bit held up with things the last couple of weeks, so sorry haven't been more in touch Lumberbunker. I'm actually off to Mexico this Saturday also, so I'll try and get in contact once I'm back, which will be closer to spring now (that's if the swine bird virus flu thing doesn't get me!) if that's alright.
Cheers,

No problem.
The stand can be made as long as you like.
My friend want this for her verandah and to be able to drag over to the beach. That is why it is shorter.
I think my Mexican hammock is almost the same as yours.
I would like to go to Mexico too.
Make sure you take lots of photos of the different ways they use to suspend their hammocks.
I would like to see other ideas.
Enjoy your trip.Scally
