Can you identify this timber?
Was wondering if anyone out there could identify this timber?
Seller doesn't know what type of timber it is and I need to know if it would be suitable for an outdoor pergola.
That's the only picture I have. Any assistance would be great.
Cheers

They're not very co-operative re pics; that's it.
I've heard that Cypress is not the best for outdoors. Is this true?

Timber Identity
Could be Cypress which is great outdoors. If it is at all is well seasoned it needs to be drilled and screwed and any nailing needs to be done with a gun.
However I'm a bit suspicious about that being cypress as it looks like ( by the number of nail holes ) that it has come from some sort of large crate.
Ask the seller where it came from. If you don't get a satisfactory answer see if you ca grab a known piece of Cypress and go there to compare the two.Cypress has a very distinctive odor also. Good luck.

Timber Id
Just had a closer look at photo. Should have done so first up!
Not Cypress! Look at bottom right beam. Cypress doesn't "fur Up" like that.
Also ends are more like the appearance of other pines.

Me thinks it might be Old Growth hoop - but very hard to tell from photo. Old growth hoop is reasonably durable outside if oiled. very different to plantation hoop.

It looks like pine to me. If the pergola is roofed over and the bottom of the posts are not in the ground then a pergola is possible. It would have to be primed and painted or oiled. Oil will not hide the nail holes. The ends of the timber and inside of joints have to be protected from moisture. It woll be a lot of work with fiddling around. Treated pine is ready to bang up. It all comes down to cost v time and effort.

It would want to be cheap,
