imported "furniture"; a must read
Gooday fellow woodies,
I came across this article in todays HeraldSun about imported "furniture" from China and the health risks. This may awaken some of the general public but not all who compare locally made fine crafted furniture and shoddy imported "furniture" on the lookout for cheap as chips products instead of high quality pieces. It could revive (fingers crossed) our local furniture market specifically for those crafts people who tuck themselves in their small sheds all alone designing and making one off works of art with real timber trying to scratch a living.
Cheers,
Evan

a local kitchen manufacturer was explaining this to me some time ago,
he knows that its pointless trying to compete on price with chinese kitchen flatpacks,
(he competes by offering much better quality and service)
what he wants is a level playing field,
he is required to manufacture under strict guidelines re formaldehyde content,(which he completely agrees with) yet there is no such restrictions on imported products.
WHO THE HELL DO WE SHOUT AT ABOUT THIS ???
now I'm all upset......I think I'll sit and have a glass of milk
now there's a thought, what if I import milk from china and re-badge it as a surface finish for kitchen cupboards)
what if the hokey pokey is really what it's all about?

Don't think that we don't use Formaldehyde glues here - it is often suggested as a good glue for Redgum etc.. I assume that the levels are a lower than what is being measured i.e. the imported stuff must have been way above standards but glues, paints etc.. with high formaldehyde and VOC's are all used here everyday.
The uniforms didn't sound good though____________________________________________
