Joining Dowel
Has any one got any good ideas on how to join together short pieces of 19mm dowel.

To echo 's question, WHY???
I would reckon it would depend on the purpose of the joint. My first reaction would be to say don't be so tight. Go and buy longer dowels.
However there may be some crazy irational reason as to why you would need to joint a dowel and in that case I would probably say the easiest would be a splice joint. Not the most acurate or even the easiest to glue but a starting point. A double or even a tripple splice would be better.

Irish Method of Work Statement - Joining Small Dowells
Instruction:
Precisely drill out the middle of the 19 mm dowels with a 5-10 mm or so drill bit. Insert a longer length of the smaller diameter dowel into the hole, after applying a small amount of PVA or similar.
Keep putting the larger dowels onto the smaller, longer dowel until the desired length is reached ....
