Default Lamp Table in NZ Red Beech & Sydney Blue Gum

I made this table about 6 years ago simply to test out NZ Red Beech and these GlueLam Table tops my old employer was getting into. It's a bit rough but when I made it I had only a drill & G clamps that weren't long enough to clamp it together.
The joints are dowels aligned by eye because I had no dowel jig and all the pieces are cut with a hand saw and squared by eye (yes I had no tools at the time). I re sawed everything by had from 6x1 1/2" and dressed it by hand - I had no plane so I rolled the back edge of the saw blade into a scraper with a screwdriver handle and used it to dress & true the boards.

Red Beech is an awesome timber to work with - it's like cutting butter, everything happens just as you intended it to and it's not to soft not too hard. About like Tas Oak but with no splintering. Takes a profile beautifully too but it's a little on the exy side however.
The Sydney Blue Gum top has really darkened over time and looks more like Jarrah.

When I made this table I reversed the rules a bit and rotated the legs so that they are long side to short side and I made the rails a smaller section to the legs just for a bit of experimentation.

Enough about me - here's some pics:

You didn't perhaps use a cat's tongue to sand it did you?

funnily enough I had a belt sander at the time but sanded by hand. The top was already sanded to 240 straight off the line and the beech was so soft that a light scratch by hand was enough after scraping.
