Looking for a woodworking club.
Hello.
My name is Tracy, a 47 year old Male from Montana. I have recently moved to Australia and am looking for a woodworking club in the Southern part of Brisbane. If anyone has any information, or suggestions I would greatly appreciate an e-mail, or any other comments you might have.
Thanks all,
Tracy

G'day tracy, welcome to gods own earth.
Round here we consider darra to be the west, but anyway.
Not sure whats out that way.
Bayside wood turners & crafters down at manly ( a good drive ) is worth a visit, I know there is an active club at ipswich ( still a good drive ). I'll ask around in y travels for something out your way.

Gidday Tracy,
I can't help you concerning the woodworking club; unfortunately most of the ones that do exist seem to concentrate on peripheral woodworking crafts like turning and intarsia, rather than furniture making.
It is some years since I visited Big Sky near Bozeman (for a family re-union of my Scottish family); it was a sobering reminder of the Scottish diaspora to find that not one of the 100 or so attendees had a Scottish accent
Anyway, welcome to QLD; I think you will find the climate a bit more comfortable than Montana's.

I'd be keen to join myself as my own fine woodworking skills are not so great.
Anyone in Brisvegas who might be interested, please PM or call me.

Craig,
This sounds like the start of something big Dean and Major are not far from you, and I am sure there are quite a few other forum members in town who would be keen to set up a club when there is so much shed space available. It is now just a matter of finding $50,000 or more to fill it with machinery.
I am too far away to be an active member there, but I would be happy to make some sort of contribution, like, say, making a workbench, towards setting it up.
Perhaps you should post a thread in the Announcements forum about your generous offer. It may be missed, buried in this thread.

Rate my interest as high, too!
I was a member of the Qld Woodcraftsmens (sic) Guild, which is now moribund and will probably be pronounced dead before the year is out. It was organised along the lines of an old-fashioned Guild, and didn't welcome beginners. For a while I served on its executive, and tried to pursuade the members of what was already a dwindling group, that they were going nowhere quickly on that policy, and should open up, if only to pass on some of the undeniably great skills and experience of senior members. Due to work pressures, I dropped out for a few years, during which time they did loosen up a bit, but a coup by hardliners saw a return to the Guild mentality, and pretty well sealed the fate of the group, which is now down to about 7 members, and monthly meetings twice a year.
So, after all that long-winded intro, what I want to say is, it's high time we had a club that was open to anyone with a passion for wood, that's easy for city to Western Suburbs people to access. Can't imagine why it hasn't happened before, but this sounds like the perfect oportunity to get it up and running!
Yes, there are issues arising about clubs, and being legally incorporated, etc., for insurance cover, and much as most of us detest that sort of nonsense, it's real, and needs to be addressed. So if this goes ahead, I hope we have a few people with experience in running these things front up on day 1.
And I hope this gets off the ground!
Cheers,IW

Amazed
Well I have to say I am truly amazed at the outpouring of responses to this simple post. As I said I am a novice, self taught. I love the idea of lurning from more experience woodworkers. I have spent a lot of my time drawing, measuring, practice cutting, and hours of time just figuring out how to make something work. I have made a few nice small boxes, inlay, and some pine childrens furniture. Unfortunately I really want to try cabinets, and do not feel I have the skill yet, or perhaps it is more self confidence.
Hopefully someting takes off, and I would be more than willing to put in some sweat equity to help. My managerial/organizational skills are not great, and money is a minor hindrance, but hard work has never been.
Thanks again for all the responses.

Organiser needed
Well, this looks like a possible goer. I suggest that the next step is to hold a meeting to discuss where we go from here. Whilst I am happy to lend the use of my premises and keen to become a member of the club so I can learn from all the clever people out there, I don't have either the time or inclination to organise the thing, nor do I think it would be necessarily appropriate, given that I have a business supplying timber - the potential conflict of interest is pretty obvious.
Sooo, if any of you sawdust manufacturers are available to take on the interim organising role until we can get something more concrete set up, please feel free to do so. My premises are available to hold a meeting pretty much any time. I hope someone can take it on, because I sincerely believe this will be a useful addition to the woodwork scene in fair Brisvegas. I will help wherever I can - just give me a call.Cheers,
Craig

Thanks to all.
I appreciate all of the input folks. I will be looking into the woodworking club in Ipswitch as that seems the closest with the most varied woodworking. I am a little surprised at some of the hours the various clubs are open though. It appears if you work a 8:00-5:00 job then the open times may be very limited. Perhaps set up more for people who have already retired, etc..I guess we will see how it goes.
Thank you again for your welcome.

One way arround the whole incorpiration, club politics, comitte mentality is for some one to open a wood working club as a business or as part of their business. Calling it a school has some perculiar advantages too.
just a thaught.
