Mirror Frame Dimensions
I am building a mirror frame from blackwood for a mirror 45cm x 170cm
What would you use as minimum dimension for the timber frame?
The frame will be rebated to take the mirror and held in with silastic to spread the weight over the entire frame.
Do you think 25mm (rough sawn) thickness on the frame is enough or go for 38mm (rough sawn)
How would this effect the look?

I'd personally go for the 38mm but I'd say running a small test would help you decide what look you want. If the mirror is purely for functional use, then a thin frame. If it's for Looks as well as function, then I'd go for the wider frame. I'd also use the wider frame to show off more of the blackwood's beauty too.
cheers

Mat, I recommend an old framers trick. Cut some MDF "L" shaped pieces, with lengths of (say) 300mm and various leg widths of (say) 40, 60, 80 and 100mm. Paint the L's a paint colour similar to your final frame timber (ie light or dark brown). Prop the bare mirror up into somewhere near its final position on the wall and hold the L's against one of the mirror's corners. You will be amazed at how quickly the right width jumps out at you.

Mat, it is a big mirror so it will be very heavy. I would use 38mm thick timber for sure. Remember you will have to dress the timber so 25mm will become 20mm or less.
I will also make the frame at least 10cm wide. It gives you enough of width to make a strong mitre joint.Visit my website at www.myFineWoodWork.com
